A presence detector for KNX building control
STEINEL IR Quattro HD-2 24m KNX UP is a white ceiling presence detector for offices, classrooms, meeting rooms and other indoor spaces equipped with KNX automation. It combines movement and ambient-brightness detection with temperature and relative-humidity measurement, making several useful room values available from one mounting position. This is a bus detector: the lighting and climate equipment are operated by the KNX actuators specified in the project. Its white RAL 9003 plastic housing and UP concealed-mounted version should be chosen to suit the ceiling construction and cable route as well as the required detection coverage.
Square PIR coverage
Detection uses four passive-infrared, or PIR, elements with 5200 switching zones. Sensitivity and the use of individual elements in KNX functions can be configured. Their fields overlap, so they should not be treated as four sharply separated independent room sectors. A mechanical reach adjustment on the back of the detector supplements electronic configuration. The 360° square coverage suits groups of workstations, but furniture and partitions can interrupt the detector’s view. PIR responds to heat changes associated with movement; it does not identify a completely motionless person by breathing alone.
At the manual’s reference mounting height of 2.8 m and potentiometer position 7, the presence area is 9 × 9 m, tangential movement covers 24 × 24 m, and radial movement covers 7.5 × 7.5 m. The largest area does not offer the same sensitivity to small movements at a desk. Permitted installation heights are 2.5–10 m. For another height or a smaller area, use the corresponding row in the manual’s coverage table and test the actual detection after the furniture has been installed. Detector positioning forms part of the room lighting design.
Dimming commands and constant-light regulation
The current KNX V3.5 application provides four lighting outputs and constant-light control with two outputs. Lighting outputs can be configured to send switching commands or dimming values. Constant-light control adjusts the value according to measured brightness and the selected target. 0–100% dimming telegrams are sent to a compatible KNX dimming actuator; the detector itself is not a 230 V phase-cut dimmer and does not switch the lamp load. The second constant-light output follows the first with a configurable offset, useful for coordinating two lighting rows receiving different amounts of daylight.
Lighting calibration improves regulation accuracy, while the control speed and value increments can be configured. Basic lighting and different day/night settings are also available. The application distinguishes several brightness ranges: its ETS parameter table gives a 10–1000 lx switching threshold, a 2–1000 lx constant-light setpoint, and a 10–2000 lx threshold for the separate twilight output. These are different functions rather than one universal adjustment. The stay-on communication object accepts 10–65535 seconds, equivalent to a maximum of 18 h 12 min 15 s. The actual values for each enabled function are selected in the ETS project.
Twilight, presence and indoor climate functions
An independent twilight output can send a command based solely on measured brightness without considering presence. It supplements the regular lighting function, which combines presence with brightness. Presence and absence objects, HVAC commands, temperature and relative-humidity values, calculated dew point and logic functions are also available. The temperature measurement range is 0–40 °C and the relative-humidity range is 0–100%. These are KNX data and control objects; the detector does not contain a physical ventilation-load relay. Their connection to the building equipment is established as part of the KNX system design.
Bus connection and commissioning
Power is supplied by the KNX bus. The current article table gives a nominal 30 V rating and 0.3 W consumption, while the manual specifies 16 mA at 24 V. These figures refer to different voltage conditions. The physical address and application are loaded with ETS using the programming button. STEINEL Connect supports reading sensor values, and the IR Quattro HD-2 can also operate on the Bluetooth Mesh side. The application explicitly states that Bluetooth does not communicate to or from the KNX system, so it replaces neither the KNX bus nor ETS commissioning.
Installation in suitable indoor ceilings
The UP concealed-mounted housing is intended for ceiling installation, with the sensor module magnetically attached to the connection module. This exact article is rated IP20 and intended for a 0–40 °C environment. Dimensions are 103 × 103 × 67 mm, with a net weight of 135 g. Provide space for the concealed connection module in the appropriate mounting box. A separate KNX bus power supply and lighting dimming actuator are not included. Connections should follow the dedicated KNX manual. The manufacturer’s five-year warranty applies subject to its terms.
